Warning issued to dog walkers after palm oil found at bay near Gourock

A warning has been issued to dog walkers after palm oil was found at Lunderston Bay near Gourock.

The foul-smelling substance, often found in white or yellowish pebbles or blocks along the shore, is ‘attractive’ to dogs – however, they can become seriously unwell if they ingest it.

Park rangers at Clyde Muirshel, Scotland’s largest regional park, urged dog owners to be ‘vigilant’ when visiting the area by keeping their pets on a short lead.

While palm oil itself isn’t poisonous to pups, it is often mixed with harmful bacteria and toxic substances such as diesel from ships.

Common symptoms after ingestion include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, dehydration and even pancreatitis, a potentially life-threatening condition.

Washed up palm oil can also cause blockages within the gut due to its semi-solid state.

A statement released by the Clyde Muirshel rangers said: “The rangers have removed what they have seen.

“It is harmless to humans but please do not touch with your bare hands.

“Several regular dog walkers have been helping by picking up pieces in their poo bags and disposing of it in the bins.”

They added: “Could regular beach users please consider keeping their pets on a short lead or assist by bagging and binning any pieces they find.”
