Warning issued to dog owners who walk their pets in woodland

Dog owners who walk their pets in woodland or heathland have been issued a warning by vets as the first cases of seasonal canine illness are reported in the UK.

A vet surgery took to social media this week to share the urgent cautionary note to pet owners.

They have been told to look out for the three key signs in animals vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy which usually start within 72 hours, BirminghamLive reports.

Dowding Vets wrote: "Seasonal Canine Illness alert!!!

"We have just seen our first case of seasonal canine illness.

"Take care when walking around the Daneshill Lakes area; but remember your dog could be at risk walking in any woodland area."

The vets added: "We advise that until the weather changes to cooler temperatures avoid walking your dog in woodland or heathland.

"After walks check between toes, in armpits and groin area, and around ears for orange/red coloured mites (see picture).

"Please get in contact for further advice if your dog has any of these symptoms."

The post has been shared by over 330 people, with well over 50 comments from concerned animal lovers.

"Spread the word," wrote one anxious pet owner.

Another dog lover wrote: "Be careful out there."

"Watch out," agreed a third, with many others moving to tag in friends and family and loved ones in the comments section.
