Warning issued to Ayrshire drivers as 'lethal' snow conditions hit M77

Ayrshire motorists have been warned of apparent 'lethal' driving conditions this morning.

One road user said the M77 from Fenwick to Silverburn was "absolutely lethal" as snow continued to fall.

A yellow weather warning remains in place until 9am tomorrow for much of the central belt.

Another Ayrshire driver told fellow road users to "avoid" the M77 as blizzard-like conditions hit the major route earlier.

Ayrshire Police Division also warned local drivers to stay at home and only travel if essential.

The force posted: "Please take care on the roads this morning.

"Snow and difficult driving conditions affecting some parts of Ayrshire this morning and towards Glasgow and Renfrewshire too.

"If you do need to make an essential journey please do so safely, but the message remains STAY AT HOME."

The Met Office warning reads: "A band of snowfall will push northeast into this region during the early hours of Thursday and become slow-moving before clearing during Friday morning.

"Snow may fall to lower elevations for a time with some locations seeing several centimetres by Friday morning.

"Above 200 metres elevation, significant and prolonged snowfall is possible throughout Thursday before easing on Friday morning with the potential for 15-20cm to accumulate which may lead to transport disruption."
