Warning issued for Velvet Strand in Portmarnock as heavy rainfall expected to increase bacteria in water

A prior warning has been issued for one of Dublin's nicest beaches ahead of heavy rainfall.

The Velvet Strand in Portmarnock is expected to have higher levels of bacteria in the water over the coming days due to the weather.

Fingal County Council issued the warning today on advice of the HSE, and it will come into place from tomorrow, June 24 for 72 hours.

According to the warning, beach users should take the following precautions:

  • Avoid swallowing or splashing water
  • Wash your hand before handling food
  • Avoid swimming with an open cut or wound
  • Avoid swimming if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system

It says: "Higher levels of bacteria are usually short-lived and most bathers are unlikely to experience any illness."

Thunderstorms are expected in Dublin, with a yellow weather warning coming into place at 6pm this evening.

Met Eireann have also warned about a risk of "thunderstorm asthma" for those who suffer with hayfever or respiratory conditions.
