BEACHGOERS in East Lothian have been issued a warning after the UK’s only venomous fish has been spotted off the Scottish coast.
The Countryside Ranger Service said it received six reports of weever fish at the popular holiday spot, Belhaven Bay, this summer.
Experts say the weever fish’s sting can be “incredibly painful” as they have spiny backs that can puncture the soles of people’s feet.
According to The Wildlife Trusts it is described as having a deep yellowish body which tapers to the tail and an upturned, “grumpy” mouth.
The sea creature can be difficult to spot as it camouflages itself in the sand and remains hidden in warm, shallow water, with its dorsal spines sticking up.
The local authority has reportedly advised beachgoers to wear wetsuit boots as a precaution or swimming shoes.
Anybody who may come into contact with the fish have been advised to place the affected body part in hot water.
An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “Our Countryside Ranger Service has received six reports of weever fish at Belhaven Bay over the summer period.
“These fish are the only venomous fish found in UK waters and their sting can be incredibly painful.
“They are often found buried in the sand in warm weather, mostly when there is a low tide, with their dorsal spines sticking up.
“The best way to avoid being stung is to always wear something on your feet like wetsuit boots or swimming shoes when entering the water.”
