Warning issued as average number of new Covid cases spikes again

No one is immune from Covid-19, one of the HSE’s top doctors warned as the number of cases in Ireland continues to rise.

Dr Colm Henry, chief clinical officer, warned that everyone is vulnerable to Covid-19 - and that means no one is exempt from following public health guidelines.

In the past seven days, the average daily number of new cases is 120.

This is up from an average of 104 cases per day the previous week, according to HSE CEO Paul Reid.

But this compares to a seven day daily average of 936 cases that were occurring in April, at the height of the pandemic.

Everyone must continue to social distance, reduce contacts, wear face masks and follow other public health guidelines, Dr Henry warned.

Dr Henry told a press briefing at the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin this morning: “All of us are vulnerable to the virus. None of us have immunity.”

He said many people with Covid do not show symptoms.

Because of this, he said: “None of us are the best judge of whether or not we have the virus.

“So none of us have exemptions from following public health guidelines.”

But the HSE pleaded with the public to attend testing appointments if they are scheduled to have one.

Up to 25% of the 3,000-4,000 of the people scheduled to have tests each day are not turning up for their test.
