Warning issued after 'terrible, serious near miss' at pier as walker learns important lesson

A warning has been issued to walkers ahead of the darker and colder winter days and nights after one woman had a "terrible near miss" at a popular pier last night.

On Thursday night, one person was walking her dog along the Marina Pier in Greystones when her furry friend got her in "serious trouble".

The mutt suddenly disappeared, falling from the pier into the marina waters which is about four metres in height.

Woman walker turned hero when she climbed down a nearby wet ladder and saved her dog risking her own life in the process.

Others watched on and rang Greystones Coast Guard who arrived on the scene immediately.

But by this stage, the lady had managed to get her dog out with both "exhausted" but safe.

A local forum described this incident as a "very serious near miss".

It said: "The question is why are there no barriers along the pier?"

"Folks, we've witnessed a terrible near miss in the Marina.

"Luckily that happened near a ladder and this very brave and responsible lady took her chance to save her dog.

"Something needs to be done immediately to make the pier safer for walkers.

"But until then, make sure to be careful when walking around then."
