Warning issued after 900,000 scam HMRC emails, texts and calls sent out to people

A warning has been issued over scam emails, texts and calls that appear to be from HMRC after almost 900,000 complaints have been received.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been contacted by thieves pretending to be from revenue and customs making claims about tax refunds.

According to The Mirror, more than 100,000 of the reports have been about phone scams and more than 620,000 were about bogus rebates.

The calls, texts and emails tell people they are entitled to a tax refund - and ask for your bank details to deposit the money.

When you enter your details into the web page, they will be stolen and used to drain your account.

People have also been threatened with prison if they don't immediately pay a tax bill - again this is a scam to harvest your bank details.

HMRC is warning people to watch out.

Gareth Shaw, who is head of money at Which?, said: "The number of people targeted by HMRC scams is staggering and the problem is only likely to get worse as the self-assessment deadline looms.

"Sophisticated tactics like number spoofing see innocent people losing life-changing sums everyday."

HMRC and banks never contact customers asking for their PIN, password or bank details.

Sarah Coles, a personal finance analyst at investment firm Hargreaves Lansdown, said: "Millions of us are already facing the misery of completing a self assessment tax return.

"Haven't we suffered enough? Apparently not - tax return season is open season for scammers, who are keen to part us from even more of our hard-earned cash."
