Edinburgh e-scooter rider fined for riding with no insurance and on public path

People thinking about using an e-scooter to travel around Edinburgh have been reminded of the rules after a man found himself on the wrong side of the law.

Police Scotland officers in the city have charged a man who was caught riding an e-scooter with no insurance and on a public footpath.

The man will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal after cops caught him riding the e-scooter in the Meadows area of the city.

Edinburgh Roads Policing said on Twitter: [Edinburgh Roads Policing] stopped the rider of an e-scooter in the Meadows area of Edinburgh this morning.

"The rider was cautioned and charged with having no insurance, for riding an unregistered motor vehicle on a footpath and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal."

E-scooters only became legal on roads in the UK in July, but only if they are obtained through a share scheme. Riding privately owned e-scooters on public roads or footpaths remains illegal.

After a spike in popularity for the vehicles, some concerns have been raised about their safety after accidents across the world.

Trials are due to take place, including in Edinburgh where a share scheme is planned.

Jonathan Ratcliffe, from Edinburgh Office Space Provider, said:

“The Government is going to drastically change the way we commute and move around our cities and towns – the shift toward moving people, not vehicles. Electric scooters could be a common sight on the roads around Edinburgh within a year.

“We are looking at ways to incorporate the demand for electric scooters into the fabric of our Edinburgh properties, we think they could be as popular as they are on the Continent”, Ratcliffe added.
