Warning for Amazon and delivery customers as gardai uncover operation stealing packages

Gardai have urged online shoppers to make arrangements for package deliveries after a number of packages have been reported stolen after delivery.

Vans have been following couriers in different parts of the country picking up packages left on doorsteps and snatching deliveries from inside patio doors.

One estate in Youghal in Co Cork had multiple deliveries stolen on Tuesday alone.

Sergeant John Kelly of Fermoy Garda Station has said that shoppers need to be careful and arrange a safe place with courier services to leave packages if they aren’t going to be home.

Speaking to Patricia Messinger on C103's Cork Today Show he said: “If you have to get them (packaged delivered to your home) just have a tried and trusted method in place that if you’re not there that you know one of your neighbours is in a position to take in the item for you.”

As the number of online deliveries increase closer to Christmas, Sgt John Kelly suggested that the scary situation could become more serious over the coming winter months.

He added: “There have been instances of (vans following courier vans), it could be with Christmas coming, there could be more in the future as well.”
