Warning for 70mph winds issued for whole of Scotland as storm named

THE entirety of Scotland has been issued with a weather warning ahead of Storm Floris's arrival.

The Met Office has issued a warning from 6am on Monday, August 4 until 6am on Tuesday.

It comes after the Met Office named the sixth storm of the season, Storm Floris, which will arrive on Monday and bring unusually strong winds.

Storm Floris is likely to bring a spell of unseasonably strong and potentially disruptive winds on Monday and into Tuesday.

The warning covers a swathe of the northern half of the UK, from Northern Ireland, north Wales, northern England, and the whole of Scotland where the strongest winds are expected.

Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “Across the warning area, many inland areas are likely to see gusts of 40-50mph, with 60-70mph more likely at higher elevations and around exposed coasts in Scotland.

"There is a small chance that some locations here could even record gusts of 85mph.”

As Storm Floris tracks across the northern half of the UK, winds will first begin to ease in the west on late Monday but remaining very strong until early Tuesday in the east of the warning area.

What should I expect in a yellow weather warning?

  • Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
  • Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • Some roads and bridges may close
  • Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
