Warning extended as Merseyside set to be battered by 45-hours of thunderstorms

The Met Office has extended it's weather warning for thunderstorms in the Merseyside area - with torrential weather potentially now lasting for as long as 45 hours.

The yellow weather warning comes into effect on Tuesday morning at 3am - when storms are set to hit the city.

But the Met Office has now extended its thunderstorm warning and will now finish at 11.59pm on Wednesday.

Forecasters are warning that the thunderstorms are likely to cause flooding in places and possible travel disruption.

The Met Office said: "Thunderstorms and outbreaks of heavy rain already affecting some southern and western parts of the warning area during the early hours of Wednesday then become more widespread through Wednesday daytime.

"In a few places these thunderstorms could produce 30 mm of rainfall in an hour and 40 to 50 mm in a few hours. Some parts of the warning area will miss the heaviest rainfall."

Last week, Merseyside saw one of the biggest thunderstorms in years after the hottest day of the year last Tuesday.

Plenty of people reported being woken up by the hammering rain and thunder breaking across the region.
