Warning Christmas TikTok trend could land drivers with £1,000 fine

The trend sees people dress up their cars in a bid to spread some festive cheer.

But experts have warned this is dangerous and have urged drivers not to follow suit.

Motorists have now been warned they could be fined or receive penalty points.

A study conducted by Confused.com used social media data to find out which car customisations have been liked and saved the most - either to look on-trend or to stand out in the car park.

The most popular car modification saved by social media users was that of a wreath added to a vehicle's chassis - with 3,495 saved pins.

Although they are traditionally hung on front doors, some social media users have went as far as tying them onto bonnets and fenders.

In a close second place in terms of popularity comes the act of tying Christmas present boxes to roof racks with 2,319 respective saves.

And in third place, is the art of decorating a vehicle with Christmas lights.

With 1,040 pins and thousands of likes on video social media platform TikTok where the trend originated, many of the posts have gone viral.

However, the trend has not impressed law officials who are able to hand out hefty fines and points due to road users breaching the Highway Code.

According to the Highway Code and the Road Traffic Act, a driver is not allowed to use a vehicle if their view of the road is obstructed "in any way".

The resulting penalty is a £100 fine on the spot, which can reportedly rise to £1,000 and three points if you dispute and lose in court.
