Taxi driver approaches young school pals in leafy suburb and offers them a lift

Police have launched an investigation after reports two schoolboys were approached by a man in a black cab who offered to give them a lift.

Officers were called to Moss Lane in Hale at around 8.45am on Thursday (19 January) after two boys, aged 11 and 12, were said to have been approached by an unknown man who asked if they would get into his car and said he would drive them to school.

The boys refused and the man drove away, GMP said. No attempts where made to take the children - in what police have assured is thought to have been an isolated incident.

Police have described the driver as an Asian man in his late forties, who is balding with a black beard. He was driving a silver-coloured Hackney cab style vehicle.

The boy's school, which has not been named, were made aware of the incident to ensure appropriate safeguarding measures were put in place, police confirmed.

In a bid to reassure local residents, the force have stepped up patrols in the area and a uniformed presence will remain over the coming days.

Officers say they are keeping an open mind about the intentions of the driver, and are pursuing 'multiple lines of enquiry.'

They have issued a plea to the driver, who they'd like to speak to, along with anyone else who might have been in the Moss Lane area from 8.30 to 8.50am on Thursday.
