Warning as police called over 'high number' of people outside Gateshead pub

Police were called to a Gateshead pub after groups of people reportedly congregated outside.

Northumbria Police confirmed multiple calls were made on Wednesday night amid concerns about groups of people outside The Ship.

The Eighton Bank pub has since confirmed there were "high numbers" of people outside, forcing it to stop serving takeaways for the time being.

"Due to high numbers of people congregating around the property and to respect social distancing requirements we’ve decided to no longer serve takeaway food or drink until further notice," said the pub in a Facebook post.

"Thanks for patience and see you all shortly."

Witnesses told ChronicleLive the scene resembles "a bank holiday weekend" with "hundreds of people outside".

Chronicle Live has contacted the pub for a comment.

However it is understood that Gateshead Council officers were planning to attend the pub on Thursday to speak to management.

And the scenes have promoted a fresh social distancing warning from Northumbria Police, after the force confirmed it had received a small number of reports from around 4.30pm.

A spokesperson said: “We would ask everyone to continue to follow the regulations which are in place to help protect us all from the spread of Coronavirus and ultimately to save lives.”

Pubs and bars have been closed since Boris Johnson ordered the lockdown in March.

Some have since pivoted their business model, continuing to trade by selling takeaways.

However, senior Government figures have previously speculated that they may be among the last businesses to open once lockdown ends - although there is hopes those with an outdoor space could open in a modified capacity.
