Warning as Irish Water investigating 'strange taste and smell' reports in parts of Dublin

Irish Water has said that it is investigating reports of strange smelling and tasting drinking water in areas around Dublin today.

Residents from Drumcondra, Fairview/Marino and Castleknock have issued complaints to the company claiming that something isn't right, reporting an unusual taste and whiff off the water running from their taps.

Irish Water is aware of these odour reports in the capital and is currently investigating the matter but are confident that the water is still okay to consume.

They have reassured customers that the water is safe to drink and is continuing to be treated at plants, falling in line with drinking-water regulations.

In other water related news, a Do Not Swim Notice has been put in place for a north Dublin beach due to sewage pollution in the water.

Fingal County Council issued the notice following after waste material was spotted in the sea.

The council said the pollution was most likely caused by discharge from  the wastewater network.

The notice will remain in place for at least six days.

The council said: "Loughshinny Beach remains open but beach users are asked to respect the ‘Do Not Swim’ notice as it has been put in place to ensure that the health of bathers is not compromised.

"Members of the public can check for water quality at any of the monitored bathing waters in Ireland in advance by accessing the EPA website at  www.beaches.ie  or by checking the notice board at the entrance to each beach."

A drainage investigation is underway and a resample will be organised to lift the notice once this is completed.
