Warning as Glasgow braces for two very different ‘parades’ on the same day

The National:

REVELLERS in Scotland’s biggest city have been warned not to confuse two very different “parades” happening this weekend.

On Saturday, July 4, emo rockers My Chemical Romance will be playing at Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park as part of their world tour marking 20 years since their seminal album Welcome To The Black Parade.

Also on Saturday, July 4, more than 11,000 Orange Order members are expected to take part in their own Glasgow “parades” to mark the 336th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne.

In a tongue-in-cheek viral social media post, My Chemical Romance fans have been warned about accidentally joining the wrong parade.

“To anyone from outside of Glasgow going to MCR at the weekend: if you happen to see 'a parade'/marching band happening in the city on Sat – please be aware, it is NOT a parade!” the warning said.

“The Orange Walk actually carries a LOT of unpleasant politics/history here so it's best not to engage.

“Just a PSA because the irony of Glasgow having a marching band in the city on the same day as Long Live The Black Parade isn't lost on me – but I don't want anyone visiting just assuming it's something cute and fun when it's very much not because it's driven by hatred and bigotry.”

Other users responded to the post with their own hilarious responses.

“When I was a young boy, my father took me into the city to see the Orange parade,” one user said in reference to the My Chemical Romance album’s title track and its famous opening line.

“I’d say avoid wearing green, blue or orange but you guys will all be wearing black anyways,” a second joked.

“Pure crying at the idea of confused emos joining an orange march,” a third said.

Both of the Glasgow "parades" will have some similarities, not least adult men in costumes longing for the past.

However, remember this crucial detail to avoid confusing the two: only one will have songs people actually want to hear.
