WA bushfire threatening homes extinguished

Water bombing planes were deployed over a fire that threatened homes in southern WA. (AAP)

A bushfire in southern Western Australia has been extinguished but residents have been warned to remain vigilant in case the situation changes.

The blaze burnt through four hectares less than a kilometre from Albany's central business district on the west side of Mount Clarence, threatening homes on Thursday.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said on Thursday night firefighters were patrolling the area and mopping up.

The cause of the fire hadn't been determined.

Albany is 417km southeast of Perth and has a population of about 39,000 people.
