Warning after woman loses third cat to anti-freeze poisoning in East Lothian

Residents of Cockenzie and Port Seton have been urged to remain vigilant after a local's pet cat had to be put down after ingesting anti-freeze.

Shirley Currie took to a local Facebook community group to warn others after she lost a third cat to poisoning.

"Just left the vets after having to having one of our cats put to sleep - he had been poisoned after ingesting anti-freeze.

"Most of our cars are lying doing nothing, can I please ask folk to check that you have no leaks while your car is out of action.

"This is a terrible time for human life but anything that could be done to cause less stress to us all in these difficult times is appreciated."

Others in the same area of East Lothian have come forward in the comments on Shirley's post on 'Cockenzie & Port Seton People' to confirm that they too had lost pets to the same cruel fate.

One wrote: "This has been happening for a few years now, I lost a cat 3 years ago due to some sod in the village doing the same with antifreeze to my baby.

"My heart goes out to you, so sorry for your loss!"

Another added: "This is how two of our cats died - and it was deliberate poisoning. I hope you discover this was accidental."

Poisoning cats can constitute a criminal offence; under the  Animal Welfare Act 2006  the maximum penalty for anyone found guilty is up to 6 months imprisonment and/or a £20,000 fine.
