Warning after sick telephone scammers call woman pretending to be Thomas Cook refund agents

A warning has been issued over an alleged phone scam in wake of the collapse of Thomas Cook.

A woman claims she received a cold call from someone claiming to be a 'refund agent' at the travel firm who went bust earlier this week.

The caller asked for her bank details in order to process a refund for her holiday - however she hadn't even booked one.

Police fraud experts have now urged people to be vigilant and warned that genuine organisations would never call up out of the blue and ask for bank details.

Rachel Hainsworth said in a Facebook post that has now been shared over 85,000 times: "Just had a phone call from 'Thomas Cook refund agent' going to give me a refund on the holiday I have purchased (no I havent) just need my card details and 3 digit number on back to refund me ...... FFS.... this is disgusting.. people have lost their jobs and livelihoods and people are already scamming rx."

The woman who took the call lives in Kent but it is understood others across the country may have also received similar ones.

The woman says she was asked for her bank account details (PA)

The 178 year-old firm went into liquidation in the early hours of Monday morning with the loss of around 9,000 jobs in the UK.

However the repatriation flights, to bring the roughly 150,000 British overseas at the time they collapsed are being organised by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Whilst refunds for those who bought package holidays with the company are being dealt with by the CAA through their ATOL protection scheme.

A spokeswoman for Action Fraud said: “A genuine and legitimate organisation will never contact you out of the blue and ask for your financial details.

"If you receive a call you are not expecting, hang up and contact the company directly using a known email or phone number.

“If you think you have been a victim of fraud, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via www.actionfraud.police.uk.”
