Warning after potentially lethal medication stolen in Northumberland burglary

A safety warning has been issued after lethal medication was stolen from a Northumberland veterinary practice.

Northumbria Police were called shortly before 2pm on Sunday to a break in at a vet's in Allendale, which is believed to have taken place overnight.

Thieves are said to have gained access to the address and stole a quantity of money and other valuables along with a variety of medication from inside – including Pentoject.

The drug is used for euthanising cats, dogs and other small animals.

An investigation is ongoing, but officers have now warned that some of the medication stolen may be harmful and potentially lethal if taken by humans.

Officers have urged anyone who comes across the drugs to hand them in at a police station and have asked for anyone with information to come forward.

Inspector Michael Quinn, of Northumbria Police, said: “We’re carrying out a range of enquiries into this incident, but in the meantime, I would ask members of the community to be vigilant.

“We would ask anyone who sees these drugs or has information about the burglary to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference 533 21/03/21 or use the ‘Tell Us Something’ page the Northumbria Police website.

Alternatively, you can call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
