Warning after man turned up at Gosforth home claiming to be collecting money for Newcastle foodbank

Householders are being warned about doorstep scammers after a man turned up at a home claiming to be collecting money for a foodbank.

The incident took place in the Jubilee Road area of Gosforth, in Newcastle, on Monday evening.

A man knocked on a door and asked the occupier for money for the Newcastle West End Foodbank.

However, the charity says it never sends representatives to go door-to-door and does not ask people for money directly in this way.

The matter has been reported to the police and inquiries have been launched.

In a warning to the public on its social media channels, Newcastle West End Foodbank said: "We were contacted on Monday evening by a concerned gentleman in the Jubilee Road area of Gosforth. Someone had knocked on his door asking for money on our behalf.

"We NEVER canvas door to door nor do we ask for money directly. Please do not hand over any money or food. This has nothing to do with us. If he asks anyone for cash, please say no.

"We are always so overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters who always help us whenever they can. This has saddened us greatly.

"If the man responsible is reading this, we have a very clear photo of you and have informed the police."

Northumbria Police says people should not feel pressured into giving money to anyone on their doorstep.

A spokesperson added: "We can confirm we have received a report from a member of the public who was concerned about a man going door-to-door in the Jubilee Road area of Gosforth on Monday, claiming to be collecting for a local charity.

"If you are concerned about suspicious behaviour then we would always encourage you to contact police and you should never feel pressured into giving money – it is your right to ask them to leave. Inquires are ongoing."
