Warning after international students at University of Manchester targeted in phishing scam

International students at the University of Manchester have been targeted in an email phishing scam.

'A small number of students' have been sent fake invoices requesting payments for services they haven't asked for.

They include things like airport transfers, campus and city tours and accommodation advice, university bosses said.

All of these services are actually offered for free as part of the university experience, a university spokesman added.

A warning has been issued about the scam, urging students to be 'extremely vigilant' if they receive a suspicious email.

Rather than clicking on the link or replying, they are asked to contact the university immediately.

The emails include the university logos, and come from copycat addresses such as  @ university-of-manchester.ac.uk , or @ student-support.co.uk .

A University of Manchester spokesman said: “The university has been made aware of an email phishing scam that is targeting incoming international students. A small number of students have received a fake invoice via email requesting they pay for mandatory services for their arrival in Manchester.

“We advise students to be extremely vigilant when checking correspondence with the university and if they receive a suspicious email, do not click on any links or reply and make the university aware immediately.

“The safety and wellbeing of our current and perspective students, both on and offline, is of utmost importance to us and they can be assured the university is working diligently with all relevant parties to ensure we get to the bottom of this scam as quickly as possible.”
