Warning after councillor's pet chickens are killed by 'black Labrador like' dog

Two free-range chickens kept in a councillor’s garden, in Bridge of Allan, were this week killed in a savaging by a dog.

The animals were among four which councillor Douglas Dodds and his wife Rosemary kept in the back garden of their Henderson Street home.

A black Labrador like dog was seen attacking the chickens by Mrs Dodds as she returned home at 11.45am on Monday morning.

The couple had kept the chickens there for 18 months. Each chicken would lay an egg a day.

Mr Dodds said this week that they not had any trouble with dogs before.

He explained: “There’s a wood at the back and you’d expect if there were foxes about they would go for them. We let the chickens out during the day and there has never been a problem.

“We’re pretty upset. They are not just for laying eggs, but are family pets too. They were well looked after.

“The owner of the dog involved doesn’t know what their dog has done. He or she needs to know that they have a dangerous dog.

“It could attack a sheep or even a person.

“I have kept chickens all my life. I used to keep about 40 chickens on a farm in Kinross about six years ago. They were free range. Nothing like this has happened before.

“If Rosemary had not interrupted the dog during the attack, all four of them could have been killed.”

The other two chickens went missing during the attack. On Tuesday one of the chickens was still missing.

A Police Scotland spokesman said a report on the matter had been made and officers will be conducting enquiries in the coming days.6
