Warning A1 drivers - stretch of road to be closed overnight in Gateshead for more than two weeks

A stretch of the A1 will be closed overnight for more than two weeks, drivers have been warned.

Resurfacing work will be carried out by Highways England on the road between Birtley and the Coal House roundabout in Gateshead.

The A1 will be closed north and southbound and will be shut each night from 8pm until 6am from Thursday, September 12 until Monday, September 30.

Highways England say they need to shut the road completely to keep workers safe.

Traffic will be diverted via the A184 and A194(M) and drivers at Eighton Lodge roundabout will be sent along the A167 to the A184.

Plans have now been submitted to improve the dual carriageway on the same stretch of the A1 between Birtley and the Coal House roundabout next year.

The scheme, which will cost anywhere between £250m and £350m, proposes widening of the A1 south of Gateshead to four lanes between junction 65 and 67 on the southbound carriageway.

Three lanes with an additional lane will also help manage traffic joining and leaving the A1 between junctions on the northbound carriageway.
