Warner to captain Winnipeg Hawks in Canada T20 league

(Reuters) - Banned Australia cricketer David Warner is set to return to captaincy in the Global T20 Canada league after Dwayne Bravo, his team the Winnipeg Hawks' designated skipper, pulled out of the rest of the tournament.

Warner, serving a year-long suspension for his role in a ball-tampering scandal in March, was also banned from holding any leadership position in Australian cricket.

However, former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis who is coaching the Hawks backed the opening batsman to add valuable experience in his new role.

"I'm sure he's going to be a good leader when it comes to captaincy," Younis was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au https://www.cricket.com.au/news/david-warner-captain-leadership-ban-cricket-australia-winnipeg-hawks-canada-global-t20/2018-07-04.

"Warner is a leader. He's a team man. I've seen him in the Indian Premier League and I've seen him as a leader. He's up there, he's up front, and he likes to give whatever his knowledge is."

The 31-year-old has failed to fire with the bat so far in the tournament, however, having scored just six runs in three innings. But his team are currently on top with two wins out of three games.
