BRIEF: After record cold, warmer temps today but some snow

Nov. 19--Light snowfall and warmer temperatures are expected Wednesday morning.

Portions of northeast Illinois, including Chicago, were to see a half-inch to an inch of snow by 10 a.m. Wednesday, with more accumulation expected in the far north suburbs, according to the National Weather Service.

But the snowfall should not pose problems for commuters, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Ratzer.

Chicago has endured record-setting cold this week, according to WGN-TV meteorologist Tom Skilling. As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, the city saw 173 consecutive hours of subfreezing temperatures, beating a record that stood for 111 years, according to Skilling.

Tuesday also broke a century-old record for lowest high, with just 19 degrees. But Wednesday is expected to be warmer, with the high in the upper 20s and maybe 30.

Winds should increase throughout the day and reach up to 30 mph Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to dip back into the teens Wednesday evening.

Even warmer weather is expected to roll into the area toward the weekend, with highs reaching the upper 40s Saturday and Sunday. Rain is also likely over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
