Warm weather set for Canberra, but snow could make a late return

Spring has well and truly arrived in the nation's capital, after the mercury rose to above 20 degrees on Tuesday.

But you should make the most of it while you can, with the Bureau of Meteorology saying winter will be back "with a vengeance" in coming days, even bringing with it the chance of snow.

Canberra will get above-average temperatures for most of the week, with clear, sunny days expected.

The average temperature at the beginning of September is 16.5 degrees.

Last weekend saw temperatures climb to 17 degrees on Saturday, before reaching 20 on Sunday.

While the mercury reached 18 degrees at the start of the working week, maximum temperatures are expected to stay above 20 until Friday.

Meteorologist at the bureau, Helen Kirkup, said while Canberra was experiencing warm weather at the beginning of spring, it would not last for long.

"There's warm days ahead, but there'll be a significant drop in temperature due to a cold front on Saturday," Ms Kirkup said.

"Spring's a mix of summer and winter, so we'll get days where it feels like winter is behind us, but then winter comes back with a vengeance days later."

The warm weather has been driven by a high-pressure system over most of southeast Australia.

Ms Kirkup said that the weather system would be replaced with a low-pressure system later in the week, bringing with it colder weather.

"A low-pressure system in the Great Australian Bight will direct the warmer air into eastern NSW," Ms Kirkup said.

"That will come through on Friday and there'll be a cold front. So there'll be a warm day ahead of that, but on Saturday the system, will drop behind the cold front and there'll be a significant drop in temperature."

The cold front will bring with it the chance of shower, as well as temperatures of just 14 degrees and below zero minimums.

The bureau says it could also lead to a dusting of snow in the ACT.

"We might even see some snow on the Brindabellas on Friday night," Ms Kirkup said.

"We're not expecting much rainfall, but there could be a few millimetres."

Wednesday is expected to reach 21 degrees, after a frosty start of 2 degrees.

Conditions are expected to be similar on Thursday, before potential showers on Friday with a top of 20.
