Ward Thomas – Invitation review: Hardly groundbreaking, but endearing in its familiarity

Invitation, the latest from twins Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas, was recorded in the sitting room studio of their idyllic Hampshire cottage. It captures their year: lockdown, long-distance love, and their own sisterly relationship.

The country-pop sound is hardly groundbreaking, but there is something endearing in its familiarity. Even when the lyrics deal with heavy topics there is a warm positivity underneath. If There Were Words explores the sad passing of a friend — but it is also about simply being there for each other when words aren’t enough.

The record is full of harmonies you feel only twins could master. Someday is a highlight, and has had significant radio play.

With bonus tracks including a Fleetwood Mac cover and a duet with James Blunt, this homemade album is a pleasant mix of country and current that gives comfort with its simplicity.
