War veteran Tom Moore, 99, raises more than £1.5m to help NHS fight coronavirus

A 99-year-old Second World War veteran has now raised more than £1.5million for the NHS to help fight the coronavirus outbreak.

Captain Tom Moore, from Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, initially planned to raise £100,000 by walking 100 lengths of his 25m garden while in self-isolation, in time for his 100th birthday on April 30.

But after an appearance on ITV's Good Morning Britain on Easter Monday, Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid called up the hero again on Tuesday as he continued to soar past the fundraising target on his JustGiving page.

Morgan donated £10,000 towards the cause and shared the story on his Twitter, urging Brits to dig deep and help Captain Moore in his fundraising efforts.

Overwhelmed by the generosity of the public, Captain Moore said: "Piers and Susanna, it is amazing, and thank you Piers for your contribution yesterday. It was enormous, it was so kind of you.

"It’s marvellous for our doctors and nurses on the front line.

"In the last war it was soldiers in uniform on the front line.

"But this time our army are the doctors and nurses uniforms and they’re doing such a marvellous job."

On Tuesday, at the time of writing, the amount Captain Moore had raised for NHS workers on the frontline of the pandemic had rocketed to more than £1.5million.

Captain Moore, who fought in Burma as well as being stationed in India, said: "Thank you very very much. You are so kind. It’s such a benefit to so many people.

"You’re giving hope to the people who are at the moment finding it very difficult.

"We shall survive and we shall all get through it in the end."

All of the money raised will go to NHS Charities Together.
