War On Waste quiz: Where do our old gadgets go to die?

The War on Waste calculates this family of five in Australia produces 140 kilos of e-waste a year

Thanks to our increasingly online love affair with gadgets like smartphones and flat screen TVs, electronic waste — also known as e-waste — is growing at an alarming rate.

And the vast majority of it is not recycled.

What we do with our e-waste matters, as it can be toxic to humans and the environment.

It also contains valuable resources like gold and copper that can be reused — and then of course, when it comes to phones and computers, there's private data to consider.

The first step in any war is to know your enemy.

Take our quiz to test your knowledge about how much e-waste there is, why that matters and how it can be reduced.

Episode 2 of the latest season on War On Waste zooms in on Australia's e-waste problem — watch on the ABC on Tuesdays at 8:30pm or afterwards on iview.
