War hero who captured 60 German soldiers honoured on 100th birthday

A World War Two veteran who managed to capture 60 German soldiers during the D-Day Landings has been honoured on his 100th birthday.

Eric Goldrein, who later became a successful solicitor and leading member of Liverpool's legal community, was recognised by the Hale Village community today ( Saturday) to mark his 100th birthday.

Mr Goldrein was shot and injured while out on a reconnaissance mission during the Normandy landings of June 1944.

After being captured Mr Goldrein then persuaded a German commander that the battle had turned against them and the only way to guarantee their safety was to surrender.

He then led the Germans back to the Allies, waving a white flag to make sure they were not attacked.

Today the Pipes and Drums band from the 103 Royal Artillery Regiment played Happy Birthday for the World War Two survivor.

Mr Goldrein attended the event with his wife Inge, who was only eight years old when she was forced to flee Nazi occupied Europe for England.

Hale and Ditton Police shared a message on social media which read: "What a lovely occasion. One of the residents of our area celebrated his 100th birthday today & wow!

"What a legend he is. If you look up the stories about Mr Eric Goldrein online it gives you an understanding of why it was specially marked today. Congratulations Eric from us all."
