War hero, 91, gets free pints for life after 70 years' loyal service to one pub

A war hero who has been a member of his ex-serviceman’s club for 70 years has been given free pints for life.

Dennis Collins, 91, paid five shillings for a membership card in 1949 when he was 21 and has been a regular ever since.

He still keeps the card for Penarth Ex-Serviceman’s Club in his wallet and is the oldest member on its books.

Now thankful bosses have presented him with a new card – giving him access to a lifetime supply of free drinks.

Delighted Dennis said: “I was 21 years old, so I joined the club and it’s been a second home ever since.

“You walk into a pub, and they’re strangers. You walk into a club, and everybody knows you.”

Club chairman Paul Galsworthy added: “Dennis would have drunk with people who founded the club after the First World War.

“I’m very pleased we can do this for Dennis as he is a lovely man.”
