'Wanton vandalism' - anger as litter bins damaged in Nottinghamshire village

Several public litter bins have been damaged or pulled away from their bases in what a local councillor described as 'wanton vandalism'.

Ashfield district councillor, David Martin, represents the Underwood ward and is also a Selston Parish councillor.

As the Ashfield portfolio holder for streets, parks and town centres he said residents in the area had contacted him.

"I'm not sure why it occurred, I got a resident report from around 2.30am about a group trying to destroy a bus shelter too," Cllr Martin said.

Speaking about the bins, he added: "It's just wanton vandalism and they must have hurt themselves doing it.

"I have reported it to the police and spoken to residents around the area, as well as taking the photographic evidence.

"I expect they will be repaired soon, but that isn't the point, it's the act. Why even bother?

"You can follow the trail as I have had reports in other areas - I counted seven bins.

Cllr Martin said there was 'a trail' of destruction as bins were reported damaged across the village (Cllr David Martin)

"It started from the Hills near Portland Road - which does have a tendency to attract drug users - then onto Woodnook Recreation ground.

"Then down towards Nottingham Road, Lea Lane and Stoney Lane.

"[The vandals] are putting themselves at great risk really, because there is bound to be some CCTV along the way.

"We have asked police to check at the petrol station and also residents who live in the area with cameras.

"I think [the culprits] must be of adult age because kids wouldn't be able to do it."

Cllr Martin said some residents had tried to put some of the bins upright again, but added the incident had caused anger in the village.

Neighbourhood Inspector Mark Dickson said: "We are aware of these vandalism incidents over the weekend.

"We would ask the local community to continue to ring 101 regarding these anti-social behaviour matters.

"The incidents have been reported to us in the early hours of Saturday morning. If anyone saw the incident or have any information please get in touch.

"We will continue to work with local partners and local officers will patrol the areas to try and track down the offenders."
