Wanted man in police stand-off and three others arrested after house raid

A wanted man remains in custody after a nine hour stand off on a roof to evade police.

Merseyside Police were called to St Matthews Grove in Thatto Heath, St Helens at around 8.50am on Monday to arrest a wanted man.

The man fled to the building’s roof and is said to have been throwing bricks at the emergency services while refusing to get down.

A police negotiator was called out to the scene, as well as other emergency services including the fire and rescue service, causing the street to be cordoned off for a number of hours.

Yesterday police confirmed the man had been detained after nine hours and have now confirmed he and three others were arrested.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO: “[The man] was later detained and a search of the property led to a large quantity of cannabis being seized.”

A 26-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage; possession of an offensive weapon; Section 18 wounding; burglary; assault; assault of an emergency worker; and possession with intent to supply cannabis.

He remains in custody.

A 21-year-old man from Thatto Heath, a 19-year-old woman from St Helens, and a 16-year-old boy from St Helens were also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and possession with intent to supply cannabis.

They have all been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

At the scene yesterday one eyewitness who lives nearby said: "I came home from work and I've never seen this amount of police and emergency services in my life.

"I've heard the guy shouting but I couldn't make out what he was saying.

"Nothing like this has happened here before."

A man who lives on one of the surrounding roads said: "He's been in a standoff with police since around 9.30am and he’s been on a roof throwing slates down.

"The road has been cordoned off since around 10am. Numerous fire engines, an ambulance and several police cars and vans."
