Wanted man found with £800 of heroin up his bum after being returned to prison

A wanted man was found with heroin in his anus while in prison after police failed to search him on his arrest.

Khalid Elkady, 32, was on licence for drug offences but after breaching his terms of licence he was recalled to prison and wanted by police.

Having been sentenced in October 2015, Elkady was released on licence but arrested in November 2018 on suspicion of the possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply. He was released under investigation but breached his licence again and was arrested on February 6, 2019.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday heard the defendant was not fully searched on this occasion and was transferred to HMP Cardiff on February 7.

The next day prison officers conducted a cell search and a full body search of Elkady.

Prosecutor David Pugh said: "During that search cling film protruding from his anus was spotted and the defendant eventually removed it and told the officers it was heroin."

When examined the package was found to contain 4.9g of diamorphine of 15% purity that has a prison value of £800.

Elkady was interviewed and said he had bought the heroin for £125 and was planning to use it for his own private use, which was accepted by the Crown.

The defendant was sentenced to four years imprisonment in May 2019 for possession with intent to supply controlled Class A drugs.

He later pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled Class A drug and conveying a prohibited article into prison in relation to the February 2019 offences having only been charged in January 2020.

Defence barrister James Hartson asked for his client to receive full credit for his guilty plea.

He added: "My client received a postal charge 11 months after these relatively straightforward and simple offences were committed for which all the evidence was available to the prosecution. That delay was not my client's fault.

"Can I invite the court to approach this sentence by totality. He is a much-changed person since these offences."

Judge Michael Fitton QC sentenced Elkady, of HMP Cardiff to eight months imprisonment, consecutive to his current sentence.
