Wantaway star typifies everything wrong at Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement

Most Manchester United supporters are fed up with the current state of the club and the Anthony Martial saga has only added to the frustration.

It's strange to think he was once a fans' favourite who stole the hearts of supporters after his sensational debut goal against Liverpool.

A United career that once promised so much has since turned sour, and it's now clear to see that Martial's days at Old Trafford are numbered.

A player signalling their intention to leave a club is hardly a rarity in modern-day football, but the club need to be very careful with how they handle the situation following comments made by Ralf Rangnick in the aftermath of his side's disappointing 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

Rangnick was asked why there were only eight United substitutes named instead of nine, and he claimed that Martial's refusal to be named in the matchday squad was the reason behind him not naming the full quota of subs available to him.

"He [Martial] didn't want to be in the squad," Rangnick revealed. "He would have been in the squad normally but he didn't want to and that was the reason why he didn't travel with us yesterday."

It's almost difficult to put into words how I felt having listened to Rangnick's claims - but I'll give it a go.

If indeed Martial did refuse to travel with the squad, the Frenchman has shown a real lack of respect for the manager, his teammates and, most importantly, the fans.

Wanting to secure a move away from United is one thing, but to let your team and the fans down like that is totally unacceptable.

The dust had barely had a chance to settle following Rangnick's comments before the whole debacle took a further twist, with Martial vehemently denying the allegation on social media.

"I will never refuse to play a match for Man Utd," the 26-year-old wrote. "I've been here for seven years and I never disrespected and will never disrespect the club and the fans."

Evidently, someone is lying.

I can't see a reason why either would feel the need to lie and it would be remiss of me to sit here and blame one or the other, but this once again opens up the can of worms that is the lack of communication - or lack of clear communication in this case - from the club.

We were recently promised that communication between the club and the fans would be better.

Look at how Chelsea dealt with the Romelu Lukaku saga. Thomas Tuchel addressed the issue straight away, with Lukaku instantly issuing an apology to the fans for what he had said in his highly criticised interview. Why can't that happen at our club?

Martial's plight epitomises everything that's gone wrong at United since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

It would be wrong of me to claim there were never such issues at United during his time as manager, but they would instantly be nipped in the bud.

Players understood what it meant to play for the biggest club in the world and, as if we even needed reminding, this situation just underlines how far the club have fallen since 2013.

Martial clearly wants to leave and the sooner the club can move him on the better. Otherwise, there's a real danger this situation could start to impact the rest of the dressing room and the last thing United need is more disruptions in an already underwhelming campaign.
