Want to read an obit? It will cost you...

After paywalls for commenters comes - wait for it - paywalls for obituaries.

This week LancasterOnline, the website of the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era newspaper in Pennsylvania, started charging readers to access its obituaries section.

Users can read seven obits for free, but if they have eight friends who die in a month, they will have to pay an additional monthly fee of $1.99 (£1.30) to carry on reading. The annual fee is $19.99 (£13).

It is the first paper to adopt a paid content system pioneered by Journalism Online. The details of the system can be found here.
