Wanniassa bakery does it again with Canberra Raiders tribute wall

The Wanniassa baker responsible for the Canberra Raiders green bread and pies has done it again with a Green Machine tribute wall now installed in his shop ahead of the team's season opening game on Sunday.

Quan Nguyen from the Vina Bakery and Coffee Shop painted the wall in the Raiders colours himself, with the help of a friend.

It is now a blank canvas for the autographs of Canberra Raiders, past and present, with Angel Marina, one of the team's legendary foundation players, due to put his moniker to the wall on Saturday.

Also coming along to the bakery at the Wanniassa shops on Saturday will be Victor the Viking, who is revved up for the first game of the 2021 season as the Raiders take on the West Tigers at Canberra Stadium on Sunday from 4.05pm.

Victor is hoping to be at the Wanniassa bakery around 10.30am on Saturday.

Tony Wood, who has played the Raiders mascot for 38 years and who on Australia Day this year was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to rugby league and the community, was excited to be back on the ground for Sunday's game.

"Absolutely wrapped," he said.

But with coronavirus precautions still continuing, Victor won't be allowed to touch anyone or shake hands or do any high-fives. But there's still potential for a socially-distanced fist pump right? And the crowd will be right behind him.

"To have 21,000 out there is going to be a lot better," Tony said.
