Warning over growing trend of Irish teenagers 'choking young women during sex'

An expert has warned about the disturbing trend of teenage boys choking young women during sex.

And psychotherapist Stella O’Malley blamed the rough sexual experiences on the rise in violent pornography.

She said: “Choking is a huge issue. It’s being shown in porn. It’s a really, really high, popular search in porn and viewers are being invited to watch choking.

“As a result, an awful lot of rough sex – and that’s what it’s being termed – is involving choking.”

Ms O’Malley added teenage girls fear they are becoming “frigid” because they do not like violent intercourse.

She told RTE’s Today With Sean O’Rourke: “They say they’re not enjoying the sex but it’s actually really rough sex.

"It’s becoming normalised. They say they’re becoming frigid because they didn’t like it.”

Ms O’Malley was speaking after a report on Thursday showed a “significant increase” in teen-on-teen sexual assaults.

It also revealed a 36% rise in the number of children being referred for sexually harmful behaviour last year.

Children At Risk In Ireland received 807 calls – most of which concerned sex assaults by relatives and peers.

Speaking about teenage attacks, it added: “In some cases, it was one person assaulting another.

“In other cases it was with a group around and maybe it was filmed and photographed.”
