A weekly newspaper In Niger has been banned by government order because it published an article that allegedly libelled the president, Mamadou Tandja. In a letter of protest to Niger's prime minister, Hama Amadou, the World Association of Newspapers argues that the banning of L'Opinion "constitutes a clear breach of the right to freedom of expression, which is guaranteed by numerous international conventions" and calls for it to be lifted immediately.
