Walworth Road fire: Over 70 firefighters tackle blaze in south-east London café

Firefighters have rescued a woman from a blaze in a cafe in south-east London.

London Fire Brigade crews were called to the scene of a fire inside a cafe on Walworth Road at 7.42am.

The woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The ground floor, basement and first floor were alight.

Images from the scene showed the surrounding road closed to vehicles as emergency services attempted to get the fire under control.

Station Manager Pete Cox, who is at the scene, said: "When crews arrived they were faced with a lot of thick, black smoke.

"They are working hard at the scene to bring the fire under control.

"Walworth Road has been closed and the surrounding roads are very busy with traffic, so we would advise drivers to avoid the area if possible."

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
