Luke Walton, as the forward facing leader of the Lakers was matter of fact after their latest disappointing loss, indicating that he hopes the team comes back re-energized after a week-long break away from each other.
With only 25 games left and the Lakers 2.5 games out of the playoffs, the Lakers task of simply squeaking into the postseason is a difficult one. Even more difficult would be to avoid the Warriors in the first round and Walton indicated to reporters after Tuesday’s loss that nothing short of special will suffice.
“Coming back re-energized with the idea of, let’s try to do something special,” Walton said. “Let’s sacrifice, let’s go out and give for the team. … That’s why I asked the guys to get quiet for a little bit of time over the weekend. I know everybody has got family and events, but spend some time by yourself, and like I said, I think we have a group that will be ready to go when we get back.”
The Lakers have nine eight days from today until their next game, a home meeting against James Harden and the Houston Rockets. And it would be quite special if the Lakers can start a path back to the playoffs against a team against which they had one of their worst moments back during October’s melee.
Rather than suspensions and punches thrown, the Lakers need to get back to playing basketball again. With Sacramento and San Antonio in front of the Lakers, the basketball better be good and Walton knows. But there’s nothing the Lakers can do now but take some time away and get to a beach.
