Walters wields axe, Maroons without Ponga for Origin III

Star fullback Kalyn Ponga is out of the Queensland side for Origin III due to a calf injury he suffered while playing for the Knights, which has sidelined him for two weeks.

Coach Kevin Walters named his side for the decider on Monday morning, dropping forwards Dylan Napa and Jarrod Wallace in the wake of the Maroons' heavy 38-6 loss in Origin II in Perth.

Corey Norman of the Dragons and Melbourne Storm's Christian Welch come into the squad as their replacements, with Joe Ofahengaue returning from injury.

The team was named in alphabetical order, with speculation as to who would replace Ponga at fullback, with Cameron Munster and Michael Morgan among the candidates.

Ponga was always a likely exclusion after Knights medics ruled him out for two weeks.

The decider takes place in Sydney on July 10, with New South Wales to name its squad tonight.
