Walter Smith tributes as Glasgow Live readers share memories of Rangers legend and 'absolute gentleman'

Glasgow Live readers have shared their memories of Rangers legend and 'absolute gentleman' Walter Smith.

The Ibrox great sadly passed away earlier this week, prompting an outpouring of emotion from his former players, managers and fans across the world.

On Tuesday, Rangers confirmed the sad news following Smith's passing at the age of 73.

Smith won 10 Scottish titles with Rangers, five Scottish Cups and six League Cups over two spells in charge, as well as leading them to the UEFA Cup final in 2008. He retired in 2011 but had a brief spell as the club's chairman.

The former Dundee United and Dumbarton player made his name in coaching under Jim McLean at Tannadice, helping the previously unfancied club to the 1983 Scottish league title and the European Cup semi-finals the following year.

After assisting Sir Alex Ferguson during Scotland's 1986 World Cup campaign in Mexico, Smith accepted an invitation from Graeme Souness to perform the same role at Ibrox.

Smith succeeded Souness in April 1991 and went on to secure a record-equalling nine consecutive titles before leaving in 1998 and joining Everton.

After another spell as Ferguson's assistant with Manchester United, where he won the FA Cup, Smith served as Scotland manager during 2005 and 2006 before returning to Rangers, where he won another three successive titles.

And Glasgow Live readers have sent in dozens of messages paying tribute to a 'true class act'.

Margaret said: "He was a gentleman to the end. He was a class act and will never be matched by anyone. He had great morals and ethics and carried Rangers in his heart to the end.

"He's left wonderful memories as a man and then as a Rangers man. My his family find comfort in that.

"R.I.P Walter and condolences to all your family at this terribly sad time."

Gail Campbell echoed Margaret's sentiments, adding: "RIP Walter, a gentleman and a Rangers legend. Loved and respected by many, you will be greatly missed Sir."

Keith commented: "Walter was a true gentleman. He did his job with ability, dignity, humour and also the respect of all Rangers players and supporters. RIP Walter."

Karen Thomson was one of many Celtic fans to say Walter Smith was 'a true legend'. Her tribute read: "I'm a Celtic fan but always thought highly of Walter Smith. Ally McCoist was always my Rangers fav and to see the way they were with each other was a pleasure to watch - more than just a boss and player but more family.

"Walter you were a true legend and a gentleman. RIP."

Fellow Celtic fan Richard Tobin was also keen to share his memories of Smith. He commented: "Rest in Peace Walter. Although manager of our city rivals I always held you in high regard as a manager and very genuine human being. My thoughts and prayers for you and your family."

And TN summed up the thoughts of many by adding: "Walter Smith has left the building but he will live on forever. He was respected by one and all because he showed them all respect.

"I am sad today but I also know that he will be at peace now. Condolences to his family.

"RIP Walter you were a man whose head and shoulders were above all and not just in football."
