Walter Smith's Celtic one-liner is embarrassing and Rangers hero has proved Hoops fans right - Hotline

It's been over a week since the SPFL declared Celtic Premiership champions and the fall-out from calling the season shows no signs of easing.

Former Rangers player Gareth McAuley’s ‘tainted and hollow’ title remarks only served to continue the crossfire as the war of words between Old Firm fans cranks up a few notches.

David Knox, Queen’s Park, said: “Well said Gareth McAuley for only saying what everybody, who is not biased towards one club, is thinking. This 8.75 in-a-row can never be compared to what was achieved by two great teams previously as they had proper competition and were handed nothing on a plate.”

Michael McCabe emailed: “I can’t even remember who McAuley is but my main point is if Rangers thought they could have pipped Celtic for the league then why were they shouting for null and void? I’m a bit upset over the way it was settled because trophy day at Paradise is priceless. I just hope it’s bouncing with fans in the stadium when 10-in-a-row comes.”

John Robertson, South Queensferry, said: “ Celtic should consider erecting statues of David Murray, Craig Whyte, Charles Green, Mike Ashley and not forgetting the SPFL. These people are the main reasons Celtic won nine-in-a-row.

"This rubbish Celtic side would not have lived with half decent opposition and Brendan Rodgers summed them up after shipping seven to Barcelona during one of many European hidings. He said it was like watching 14-year-olds and I would suggest it’s a bit insulting to 14-year-olds.”

Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: “What a childish embarrassing comment from Walter Smith. Do these fools not realise that we love hearing these comments because it shows the pain they are in. They realise that Celtic are the biggest and richest team in Scotland and will never ever be caught. The battle is over Walter, Celtic have won.”

Bez McLellan, Edinburgh, said: “All the arguments about reconstruction and tainted titles can be easily solved. Strip all the titles from the Old Firm and seal them in a league of two with no promotion or relegation and leave the rest of Scottish football to get on with their happy lives.”

Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, said: “Hotline caller Gordon Ashley claims that Genk couldn’t get rid of Ianis Hagi quick enough, but surely he meant former Celtic player Mikael Lustig who was a flop during his five minute spell in Belgium and freed after one season.”

James Kennedy, Kilsyth, said: “Rangers have signed Hagi but where is the money coming from?”

“He played in the second half of the season which coincided with the collapse of their form on the park. This is another Ryan Kent panic buy the only difference being a 'saving' of £3m.”

Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, said: “I’m not over the moon that Rangers are trying to sign Saido Berahino, West Brom and Stoke got rid of him for numerous reasons , one being he disrupted the dressing room with his constant moaning and missing training, bottom of the barrel stuff.”

John Morgan, Armadale , said: “I have come up with the Jam Tarts new name. The Grovellers.

“This is all about self preservation as there is no way Budge is thinking about any other club bar her own. I feel for the fans.”

Joe Graham, Garrowhill, said: “A lot of bitterness came from ending season 2019/20 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Awarding titles and relegating teams being so unfair on the outcome of it.

“Surely the answer must be league reconstruction for 2020 - 21 so that nobody loses by introducing a 14-14-14 setup or a 14-14-16 to allow Brora Rangers and Kelty Hearts in. The television deals wouldn’t’ be affected either as they would still have four Old Firm derby games.”

And finally.

James Brown, Glasgow, said: “As a Celtic fan I am deeply concerned about referees and their assistants eyesight. When are the SFA and SPFL going to issue an instruction that all those officials should be made to drive a car for around 60 miles, in order to check their eyesight? This should be mandatory.”
