Walter Smith memorial: Football stars attend Glasgow Cathedral service

Some of the biggest names in Scottish and English football today attended a memorial service for Rangers legend Walter Smith.

Lanark-born Smith passed away aged 73 on October 26, following a short illness, and was laid to rest at a private family funeral on November 3.

His memorial service took place at Glasgow Cathedral earlier this afternoon.

Today's invite-only service was attended by the current Rangers squad, plus Smith's close friend and assistant Ally McCoist, Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson, and former Ibrox stars such as Mark Hately, Andy Goram, Richard Gough, Mark Hately, Nigel Spackman, Derek McIness and Kris Boyd.

Rivals Celtic were represented by current interim CEO Michael Nicholson and predecessor Peter Lawwell, and former boss and captain Neil Lennon.

SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan and chief executive Neil Doncaster were in attendance, as was SFA CEO Ian Maxwell.

Rangers previously announced that the service would be screened for free on the club's Rangers TV channel.

Smith led rangers to an historic nine in a row, having taken over from Graeme Souness as he left for Liverpool in 1991.

He was appointed Everton manager in 1998, and assisted Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Smith became Scotland manager in 2004, before returning to Rangers three years later and winning a further three league titles, plus a Scottish Cup, League Cup, and took the Ibrox club to the 2008 UEFA Cup final.

He retired in 2011, with 21 major trophies to his name.
