Walrus spotted off Irish coast earlier this year heads off on sun holiday

A walrus which caused a major stir when it appeared off the coast of Kerry earlier this year has resurfaced in another country.

Named locally as 'Wally', the animal was first seen back in March by Alan Houlihan and his daughter Muireann.

The young mammal was spotted in the water before he climbed on to a rock to relax in Loc an Éisc near Glanleam beach.

Aisling Quigley, of Wild Atlantic Boats, told the Irish Mirror at the time: "He seems to be very tired and confused as to where he is.

"There has been no sign of him yet today but we believe he is feeding on fish in the harbour."

A few days after that, Wally popped up in Wales, capsizing an inflatable dinghy while he was there.

Now, it seems he's decided to take advantage of the new travel rules for a European adventure.

Pictures have now shown Wally on a slipway in Les Sables-d’Olonne, a seaside town in western France.

But he is being monitored after suffering an injury with a boat, authorities in France confirmed.

They also advised walkers not to approach Wally and to keep a safe distance.

A spokesperson added: “This is a wild, dangerous, powerful animal that can go very fast ashore.”

Animal welfare groups believe it initially came across the North Atlantic ocean from Greenland on an ice floe.
