Congratulations, Walnut Creek. You are No. 1.
Although depending on your point of view, this title may be either something to be proud of, or something that will make you take a hard look at how much time you are spending in the office.
According to data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, and compiled by Haven Life Insurance, the California city has the hardest-working people in America.
Haven Life said people who live in Walnut Creek spend an average of 46.9 hours a week working and commuting to and from work. They put in 40.8 hours a week on the job, and spend 6.1 hours negotiating traffic and using public transportation to get to their workplaces.
Those workers are also up early 31.2 percent of Walnut Creek residents are up and on their way to the job before 7 a.m.
The popularity of commuter hubs like Walnut Creek has led to something everyone in the region can commiserate about: the soul-crushing traffic situation.
"As more people move out of the city in search of more affordable housing, traffic has suffered leading to ever-longer commutes," Haven Life said.
And while Walnut Creek may be the hardest-working town around, those 6.1 hours of commuting that residents put in every week look easy compared to what residents of Tracy go through.
Haven Life ranked Tracy as the No. 3 hardest-working city in America, with its commuters putting in an average of 8 hours a week to get to their jobs and back home at the end of the day. Tracy residents average 46.5 hours a week in total work time, with 38.5 hours of that coming from actual work, in addition to the 8 hours of commuting.
And 46.4 percent of workers from Tracy are heading to work before 7 a.m.
