El Paso Walmart shooting: First picture of gunman entering store armed with AK-47

This is the first image of a gunman who at least 20 people at a Walmart shopping centre today.

The shooter, armed with an AK-47, is thought to have opened fire in the car park in El Paso, Texas, before entering the business and firing at shoppers.

CCTV images show a man wearing a black top and khaki trousers armed with an automatic weapon which looks very similar to an AK-47 assault rifle.

At least 20 fatalities have been confirmed by authorities.

One suspect, 21-year-old Patrick Crusius, is in custody, El Paso Police have confirmed.

Distressing CCTV footage posted to social media showed a man gunning people down in a Walmart car park in El Paso before entering the store.

He could be seen wearing ear defenders or headphones and clutching a semi-automatic assault rifle.

Law enforcement sources told The Washington Examiner the attacker "shot and killed locals that were fundraising outside the Walmart selling water".

Children and babies are reported to be among the injured.

CCTV showed people hiding underneath tables at a McDonald’s inside the Walmart during the shooting.

El Paso is on the border with Mexico and the state of New Mexico.

Leslie Diaz, 25, works at the Walmart.

She told the El Paso Times she was helping customers at the front of the store in the checkout when she heard multiple large “pops” getting closer and louder.

She said she looked at her colleagues, grabbed some customers and led them out of the store as shoppers began running and screaming toward the exit.

Walmart tweeted: "We're in shock over the tragic events at Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso.

"We’re praying for the victims, the community & our associates, as well as the first responders.

"We’re working closely with law enforcement & will update as appropriate."

Witness Rey Holgin told CBS News that he was about to go into the Walmart when he heard at least 10 gunshots.

Mr Holgin told CBS News that he saw at least one person, an elderly lady, fall to the ground.

According to a police scanner, the shooter was armed with an automatic weapon, possibly an AK-47.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting in El Paso, White House Deputy Press Sec. Steven Groves said.

The FBI is responding to the shooting.

Gov. Greg Abbott said he will travel to El Paso Saturday afternoon.
